Perhaps not seen as a crucial area of the game but taking into account the improving 1% of your game, the driven pass mechanics and the improved AI work done by EA(again), this is an area where we can achieve that. With the ball physics ever-growing and the ball now being seen as a separate entity, it is a skill in mastering your control of the ball. We have done a tremendous amount of research into this in real-life football, and it will be of benefit to share this with you. What to take into account
You need to make sure that when you are receiving the ball, you take into account SEVEN important factors (we told you it was skill). These are:
1. Ball trajectory/height
2. Ball velocity/speed
3. Opposition presence/pressure
4. Player ability/statistics
5. Player speed/momentum
6. Ball spin/rotation
7. Weather conditions/playing surface
This part is pretty self-explanatory; if you’ve ever played the game at any standard at all, you’ll know that the higher the ball is the more care you need to take in controlling the ball. Therefore, on FIFA, make sure if the ball is coming from a goal-kick or any other situation where the ball is coming down from height that you DO NOT have the sprint button down. Even if you’re through on goal from a lobbed through ball take the ball down and then get on the sprint button after it is under control.
Again, like above, this is pretty self-explanatory. The quicker the ball is approaching your player, the harder it will be to take that speed/velocity out of the ball so bear this in mind also. With the driven pass, this is even more of a crucial area for FIFA 20.
Another thing to consider is how much pressure your player is under when they are receiving the ball. If there is no opposition within 10 yards or more on the pitch you know you can maybe afford for the ball to get away slightly so you can use the right stick to knock the ball in front of your player into space or have the sprint button down when receiving the ball. If there is a player applying pressure, then you need to consider taking the touch AWAY from that player to get your players body between the opposition player and the ball. You can use the 360 degrees shielding the ball button to do this so hold the L2/LT button down when receiving the ball. This is a potent tool, but you need to be aware that this takes away a fair amount of your player momentum though.
We know, through our extensive research that how big you are and how fast you’re moving when you make contact with a football is a hugely important factor when receiving the ball, and this is no different in FIFA (see player speed/momentum for more detailed info). Knowing your players and their statistics can give you a huge advantage. You want to be looking for high statistics in the following areas: Agility, Balance, Reactions, Ball Control, Dribbling & weak foot ability. If you know that your player has great stats in these areas, you can attempt to control balls with more speed, higher velocity while moving quicker than with a weaker player. Make sure you look into players’ stats and familiarize yourself with their strong points, make notes if you need to. It all helps to increase your knowledge.
Momentum has two areas to consider, and this is because it must be taken into consideration whether your player is running towards the ball when you pass it or if the player is moving towards the goal when the ball is approaching them. This equation (mass x velocity = momentum) and the following information will show you why this is something so vital to consider on FIFA. The players mass (which you can tell by his body shape or knowing the stats of the player) multiplied by his velocity, or speed/motion in a particular direction, equals a lot of momentum. Therefore, when the player you are controlling makes contact with the ball, he will share his energy with it. The more dynamic the ball gets from the player you’re managing, the faster and farther it will move. The bigger the player and the more speed they are moving with, the higher the momentum will be. As a result, the more energy your player will have to share with the ball.
We understand that this may be a lot to consider so in simple terms. You must take into account how fast you are moving when controlling a ball on FIFA. If you are sprinting when receiving the ball, unless you know a player has great stats in the areas we discussed above, then be prepared for the ball to be bouncing off your player.
Backspin can also be applied to lobbed through balls. Because of the improvement in graphics, you have two ways of identifying this. The shape on the ball and even the rotation of the ball.
Weather conditions/playing surface
If you’ve played FIFA before, we’re presuming the majority of readers of this have, and then you’ll know that playing in the rain and snow means you need to be more careful and more cautious in your controlling of the ball as the ball can often get away from your players in these conditions. Also, the bounce of the ball is usually very different, so get used to control the ball in different ways in various weather conditions and adapt your technique as necessary.
Buttons and what they can help you do when controlling the ball
L2 Will put your body in between the ball and the opposition player and go into the shielding motion. Use to control in tight situations when your player is receiving under heavy pressure. Also, great to use when receiving the ball when you’re through on goal and in front of the defender will make it very hard for them to stop you and muscle you off the ball.
Left stick (add the direction of touch) – use when not under pressure and want to take a decent bit in a course.
Right stick – (add the direction of touch) – use as a way to knock the ball into space with a significant bit (see dribbling section for more detailed explanation). Also, use to flick the ball back over your head – to do this, the ball needs to be bouncing around waist high. Use when the opposition is rushing into tackles from behind your player flick the stick back the opposite way to your player movement. Works best with your defenders when attackers are chasing over the top through balls (there is a slight risk with this so practice when you are a few goals in front to perfect it).
Right stick x2 – (add the direction of touch) – use as a way to knock the ball into massive space with a significant bit (see dribbling section for more detailed explanation). Only use the double right stick flick when there is space to run into, and the opposition defenders are flying into tackles.
TIPS – When controlling with the right stick, you must now have the sprint button pressed to take a high touch out of your feet.
L2 – The dummy/through the legs/open the gate – This has any names and technically, doesn’t involve your players “receiving” the ball as they let the ball go through their legs. It can be instrumental if your opposition is diving in or trying to read your passes inside etc. To make the dummy even more help be sure to hold the direction that your player will be turning to run with the ball when holding R2/RT, so he turns quicker, and you can leave the defender for dust!
L1 + × L1 pass – use this to make your player make an explosive movement after they have received the ball. You must have L1 pressed down and BEFORE the ball reaches your player who is receiving the ball press the pass button (with the direction you want to pass, obviously). It will make your players incredibly hard to mark and will make sure they have lots of speed/momentum so you can then look to play them a through ball. □ + × (square is our shoot button remember) Use this to control the ball with a fake shot. This is an excellent way to create extra space for your player when receiving the ball. There is a skill to this; YOU MUST power up like you’re shooting the first time and then slide across to the pass button BEFORE your player receives the ball (remember to use the left stick to choose the direction of the turn). If you don’t do this, you’ll end up shooting so as we’ve said, practice this when you’re goals in front to perfect it. (Remember to use the lobbed pass button to do this in your half of the pitch) It is a brilliant tip, is this one.
Receiving the ball is a huge thing, and if you can do it effectively, in a variety of ways, you’ll be improving your game massively. Remember, especially when in possession of the ball, to try and think a few passes ahead of what you’re doing and when you’re passing the ball, try to make it as easy as possible to control the ball for the player you are moving to, particularly if they don’t have great stats in the critical areas we discussed earlier.
